Japan Travelogue in English
Japan, known as the Land of the Rising Sun, is a country rich in history and culture.
Located in Northeast Asia, spanning latitude 20° to 46°N and longitude 123° to 154°E, Japan is composed of over 3,000 islands. These include the four main islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku, as well as the southern islands of the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands. It is a maritime nation, bordered by the Sea of Okhotsk in the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and faces China and Russia across the East China Sea and Yellow Sea in the west.
With an area of 37.78 square kilometers, Japan is comparable to China in size being roughly one-quarter of its vast territory. It is home to over 125 million people, with Tokyo as its bustling capital.
The language spoken here is Japanese, which comprises of 51 kana characters and over 1850 common Chinese characters. It is recognized worldwide as the sixth most spoken language. While standard Japanese is based on Tokyo dialect, there are regional dialects in areas like Kansai, Tohoku, and Kyushu.
The majority of the population belongs to the Yamato ethnic group, with a small minority being the Ainu people who mainly reside in central and northern Hokkaido. The national flag, known as the Rising Sun Flag or Nihon Flag, symbolizes purity in white with a red sun at its center. The national flower is the cherry blossom.
Japan is divided into administrative divisions such as a Tokyo Metropolis (capital), Hokkaido (an island), two provinces (Kyoto and Osaka), and 43 other provinces equivalent to provinces in China. Below these divisions are cities, towns, and villages with their respective governing bodies and officials.
For a glimpse into Japanese culture and traditions, a visit to Tokyo is a must. This vibrant city is filled with temples and historical landmarks. The food culture is also remarkable, with sushi being a globally renowned delicacy.
On a recent trip to Nara for a study tour, visitors would have seen the towering Buddha statues and the lively deer. The giant Buddha statues seemed to reach the sky, creating an impressive sight. Being able to feed the deer鹿烧饼 and witness them eating was a wonderful experience. The evening campfire with friends was also memorable, filled with laughter and games. It was an enjoyable trip that left everyone wanting to return for more.
The words "diary," "travel," "journey," and "tour" all encapsulate the essence of experiencing Japan - a journey through history, culture, and delicious cuisine that is both captivating and memorable.
